With the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes sold and relocated north to Salt Lake City, the new owners are looking to rebrand the franchise. Snack brand Jell-O thinks the “Utah Green Jell-O’s” is the way to go.
Jell-O is owned by Kraft Heinz.
The Coyotes were sold on April 18 to Ryan Smith, who also owns the NBA’s Utah Jazz. Although the Jazz didn’t change its name upon leaving New Orleans in 1979, the Coyotes’ name and intellectual property are still owned by the team’s former owner, Alex Meruelo.
While Mr. Smith’s ownership group has produced 20 possible names, Jell-O sees a grievous omission, as it highlighted in a video on TikTok last week.
“This video is for the powers that be at Utah’s new hockey team, so if that’s not you, you can just skate on by. How is it that the Utah Green Jell-O’s is not included in the bracket of potential team names?” the clip said.
Jell-O is so embedded in the Beehive State’s culture that the Utah Legislature voted in 2001 to name it the official state snack.
The names put on the survey by the new ownership group are the Utah Yeti, Venom, Mammoth, Freeze, Blizzard, Mountaineers, Squall, Swarm, Powder, Outlaws, Blast, Black Diamonds, Caribou, Glaciers, Fury, Frost, Hive, Ice, Canyons and HC, which stands for hockey club.
