McDonald’s customers would rather eat Big Macs, so the fast-food giant is eliminating its McPlant burger.
In an interview at the Wall Street Journal’s Global Food Forum last week, McDonald’s USA President Joe Erlinger said the McPlant burger, as well as salads, will be staying off of menus nationwide.
“I don’t think the U.S. consumer is coming to McDonald’s looking for the McPlant or other plant-based proteins,” Mr. Erlinger said.
The McPlant burger used a plant-based patty from Beyond Meat.
After an initial trial run at eight McDonald’s locations in Texas, Iowa, Louisiana and California, the McPlant menu option was expanded to 600 restaurants in the Dallas and San Francisco areas in February 2022 before being discontinued that summer.
It has been a sales success in several European countries.
Salads, on the other hand, were a casualty of menu changes McDonald’s made during the COVID-19 pandemic and have not returned.
Mr. Erlinger said that “if people really want salads from McDonald’s, we will gladly relaunch salads. But what our experience has proven is that’s not what the consumer’s looking for,” according to Bloomberg News.
While Beyond Meat failed to beat out beef, chicken continues to be a major money-maker for McDonald’s.
“Our chicken category now represents $25 billion in annual system-wide sales, on par with beef,” McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski said in the company’s fourth-quarter 2023 earnings call in February as transcribed by Seeking Alpha.
