Multiple Metrorail Red Line stations on the Glenmont end of the line will close from June 1 to Aug. 31 for the construction of the Purple Line light rail and other repairs.
The Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen and Silver Spring stations will close for the entire period, while the Takoma Park station will be closed from June 1-29, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority said in an advisory.
Silver Spring is closing so a new mezzanine can be built to connect its platform with the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center and the Purple Line running adjacent to it.
The Purple Line, which is being built by the Maryland Transit Administration, is a light rail line running from Bethesda, which also has a Red Line rail station, on to Silver Spring, the Green Line station in College Park and ending at the Orange Line station in New Carrollton, with other stops in between.
With Silver Spring closed and the three stations before it cut off from the rest of the Red Line, WMATA decided to do repairs, improvements, and other maintenance work on the line at those stations at the same time.
From June 1-29, shuttle buses will ferry people from Glenmont to the Fort Totten station, which also has Green Line service. From June 30 to Aug. 31, the shuttles will run between Glenmont and Takoma Park.
